THE FESTIVAL

The MONOLOGFESTIVAL was invented in 2007 at the TD Berlin. The idea: different solos on the same theme, in quick succession in the same space. In addition to theater, there is music, debate, and get-togethers. World premieres by renowned theater makers and collectives meet new discoveries and newcomers. The festival takes place every two years and builds bridges from the individual to the collective!

In view of a polarizing world, we believe it is important to continually ask how the speech and positioning of individuals can be a starting point for joint engagement and understanding. Instead of presenting monologues as a series of unconnected soliloquies, we juxtapose them with each other in the festival. We value the political dimension of monologues, their power to venture into conversation and open up a common space for thought.

CURATION

Two curators initiate up to ten new solo theater productions for each edition. Thematic focus is on social change and the question of individuals' scope for action in relation to others. Depicting diverse social realities is just as important a motivation as bringing together different artistic styles and disciplines.

Janette Mickan and Michael Müller have been curating the Monologfestival together since 2016. To this end, they actively approach artists and ask them to develop a new position on the theme of the respective edition. Mickan and Müller have been active in the Berlin theater scene for over twenty years and are connected through many years of collaboration on theater projects. Among other things, they have realized numerous play developments for the theater group LUNATIKS in Berlin, Kiel, Hamburg, Seoul, and Brandenburg an der Havel.
